WHY CLARIFYING YOUR FAMILY CULTURE WILL CHANGE GENERATIONS

It was Wednesday morning August 20, 2014. Jen and I stood on the sidewalk in front of our home in Texas. The moving truck was packed. The kids were buckled in their car seats.

 

This was the moment that all of our planning, preparation, anxiety, and faith had led us to. We were moving away from a comfortable job and home into the unknown adventure God had for us.

 

As we stood there that day holding each other tightly and crying a few tears, what gave us the confidence to take the leap was a clear understanding of what we truly wanted.

 

It was a difficult decision to move and it was filled with a lot of fear. We didn’t have the map, but we were sure that…

 

God could be trusted in all things.

We could not teach our kids about walking in faith if we were not willing to do the same.

We were very clear about the culture we wanted to create in our home.

 

And to create this culture, we knew something had to change deep in the foundations of our family.

 

We didn’t know what was next but, we believed that what we were doing that day would have repercussions in our family for generations.

 

HOW WE CHANGED THE WATER

Since then we have found a way (on most days) to intentionally live according to a different set of rules from the world around us. It has allowed us to live more authentically according to God’s priorities for our family.

 

We have discovered how to control the pace of our lives instead of being pulled in ten different directions at 100mph.

 

We have gained confidence in saying YES more slowly and NO more quickly.

 

We did this by changing the water.

 

Let us explain…

 

There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys, how’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What in the world is water?”

 

Culture is to humans like water is to fish.

 

It is the most influential factor in defining our identity and driving our decisions.

 

When it comes to raising kids who choose to love and follow Jesus, our best hope is to immerse them in a Christ-centered culture within our homes. This is a culture that is clearly defined and emphasizes the unique ways God has created your family.

 

By clearly defining the culture of your home, you create the conditions for an unshakeable God-defined identity to grow in your kids.

 

Culture shapes Identity.

Identity shapes Decisions.

Decisions define the Journey.

 

WHY YOU NEED A PLAN

The steps to escape the culture trap are never obvious, or you would have taken them by now. All you know is that you can’t just “jump”.

 

You have a lot to consider… responsibilities. Bills. Kids. Commitments. A day job.

 

Most of us can’t just sell everything we have, buy an RV and become nomads. (although that’s not a bad idea 😉

 

There are a million and one things that can stop you from taking action.

There’s also fear… Fear that you’re not up to the challenge. Fear that you can’t blaze a new trail – that you’ll just get caught in the same old cycle again.

 

And you’re totally normal. Fear is actually there to keep you from making huge mistakes.

 

That’s why we know instinctively that without the right plan, it doesn’t make sense to take huge (and potentially risky) action.

 

What is your family culture?

 

There may be some people know exactly what they want their family to value most. Their vision is clear and they just set about doing it…

 

But most of us aren’t that lucky. Ha!

 

For most of us – we need a little help to uncover what that big vision really is, along with figuring out what the first steps are to answering God’s call to adventure.

 

It’s always the getting started that’s the hard part.

This culture has to be more than words. It has to be actionable. In this session, we will teach you a few simple strategies for putting your culture to work in your every day life and decisions.
